Hans Gnauer

Lower Austria

Hans Gnauer mainly cultivates arable land on his farm of around 175 hectares. He also cultivates vineyards, woodland and grassland on his farm.

Commitment to biodiversity:

Hans Gnauer favours soil-conserving cultivation on his land, and the main crop is direct seeded on the majority of his plots. Initially, Hans Gnauer discovered this type of cultivation primarily for economic reasons: cultivation costs are reduced and yields stabilised because the soil has better water and nutrient capacities. As a side effect, he also promotes biodiversity. His soils are full of life, particularly noticeable is the extremely good earthworm population, but other beneficial organisms such as ground beetles as pest exterminators can also be increasingly observed. As a founding member and deputy chairman of the ‘Boden.Leben’ association, Hans Gnauer communicates the benefits of soil-conserving cultivation to a wide audience.
