Reinhard Stückler

Carinthia

Reinhard Stückler runs a 100-hectare organic farm specialising in dairy cattle and forestry.

Commitment to biodiversity:

Reinhard Stückler rotates the cattle on his grassland using the principle of mob grazing. This means that the animals are concentrated on one area for only a short time. Ideally, one third of the pasture is left standing, one third is trampled down and one third is grazed. What is not grazed should not be seen as a loss: It is leaf mass that is immediately used again for assimilation or mulch, protection and food for soil life. Reinhard Stückler switched from short grass pasture to mob grazing. The areas now show better vigour, survive extreme weather conditions such as droughts or heavy rainfall more easily and ‘incidentally’ biodiversity is promoted: Plants can go to seed and dung beetles find ideal habitats.
