Karmen und Walter Watzl

Lower Austria

The Watzl family cultivates fields and grassland and keeps suckler cows on an area of around 100 hectares (home business and through the freeNature association). There are also 50 hectares of forest.

Commitment to biodiversity:

The Watzl family's business focus is on nature conservation and they implement a variety of measures to promote biodiversity. For Walter Watzl, extensive grazing and the preservation of heirloom seeds are particularly important. They cultivate 95% of the grassland areas extensively and 50% of the farm areas consist of flowering areas. Other measures they take for nature include late mowing, the creation of strips of old grass and fallow land, tree care or the rehydration of wetland areas. There are numerous ecological features on the farm: in addition to regular corncrake populations, there is a very good red-backed shrike population and several breeding pairs of whinchats. A few years ago, the Watzl family used camera traps to detect young lynx in the forest, and since then lynx offspring have been repeatedly documented in the area. The success of the biodiversity measures on the farm is also reflected in the presence of rare dragonflies such as the keeled skimmer.
