Markus Schleich

Tyrol

Markus Schleich runs his 15 hectare farm as a nature conservation business with over 200 landscape elements and a wide variety of meadow types. Ewes and lambs are kept so that the grassland areas can be used as fodder.

Commitment to biodiversity:

The extensive farming method is particularly important to Markus Schleich, even if it means that the hay harvest takes several months. He runs his business silage-free. The whinchat, among others, benefits from its extensively cultivated areas, but plant diversity is also promoted thanks to the late mowing dates. When mowing the areas, he deliberately leaves his areas standing longer in areas where others have already mowed in order to preserve places of refuge for grasshoppers or beetles. What is worth highlighting is the variety of biotope types on his farm - these include, among other things, larch, moor and litter meadows and, more recently, a limestone meadow. Markus Schleich is very concerned about increasing support for the “nature conservation agriculture” model in funding programs.
