Martin Sageder

Upper Austria

Martin Sageder keeps cattle on his 66-hectare farm. The cattle are slaughtered on the farm and the meat from old cows is also marketed. Grassland makes up the majority of his agricultural land, as well as arable land and woodland.

Commitment to biodiversity:

Martin Sageder is a convinced practitioner of staggered meadow cultivation. With this management concept, he is able to reconcile both ecological and economic challenges. He takes a quarter to a third of the grassland completely out of fertilisation and only mows it twice, with the first cut only taking place towards the end of June. In this way, he creates a habitat for ground-nesting birds and butterflies on these areas. He uses the remaining areas more intensively. In the forest, Martin Sageder favours plenter management with a focus on natural regeneration and has already been awarded the Upper Austrian Forest Prize for this.
