Ernst Junger

Upper Austria

Ernst Junger runs an organic tree nursery, which is a centre for old fruit varieties, among other things. He also keeps suckler cows on his 14-hectare farm, with the cows grazing on the land between the tree nursery.

Commitment to biodiversity:

Ernst Junger has always wanted a lot of nature around him and he has undoubtedly been able to realise this by taking over the farm, including in the form of a very special tree nursery: there are impressive hedges both on and around the site, which improve the microclimate, are wind stoppers and provide a habitat for many animals. Fruit trees are planted along the hedges, which in turn are protected from voles by the hedges. The centrepiece is the natural apple forest - a primeval forest that not only conceals old apple varieties, including some rarities, but also gives nature plenty of space. And in between, cows graze on the meadows - undoubtedly a jewel for biodiversity.
