Maria Vogt

Lower Austria

Maria Vogt's farm, which she handed over to her son and nephew in 2021, covers a total of around 40 hectares. In addition to grain cultivation, this also includes viticulture, sheep farming and vegetable growing, including farm-gate sales of their own produce.

Commitment to biodiversity:

After a stay in South America, Maria Vogt had only one way of farming: organic, environmentally orientated and diverse. Diverse in vegetable cultivation alone - 25-30 types of vegetables are cultivated. Maria Vogt is particularly keen to make people understand and, above all, savour the benefits of consuming more than just the 3-9 usual vegetable varieties. Instead, she wants to demonstrate the advantages of heirloom seeds and regionally adapted vegetable varieties. Since switching to organic farming in 1989, she has been one of the region's ‘organic nerds’ - because she has never shied away from change, which is the only way to make a difference and motivate others to join in. So it's no wonder that she has been involved in biodiversity, environmental protection and development policy for many decades.
