Alexander Steindl

Lower Austria

If you ask Alexander Steindl, a young organic farmer from Lower Austria, what he specialises in, the answer is: diversity! Different breeds of livestock live on the farm in free-range systems, and Steindl also started with agroforestry in 2020.

Commitment to biodiversity:

The topic of agroforestry has recently completely captivated Alexander Steindl. His vision is to establish a stable ecosystem on his farm in which there is a natural balance between pests and beneficial organisms and nature takes over pest control. In recent years, Alexander Steindl has therefore planted over 3,000 hedge bushes and is constantly adding 400 standard trees. There are currently 28 types of fruit with 168 different varieties growing on his farm. Amongst all the shrubs and trees graze 10 Murbodner cattle, almost 50 Turopolje pigs, 13 Krainer stone sheep, 8 Pinzgau goats, 400 pasture-raised broiler chickens and 70 pasture-raised turkeys. Because most of the animals live outdoors all year round, the organic farmer no longer needs to spread manure. As a result, the meadows and pastures are now much more colourful. Alexander Steindl now also observes more butterflies, such as the common yellow swallowtail. Birds of prey have also multiplied in recent years because they find enough voles to feed on in the agroforestry areas.
