Georg Berger

Styria

Georg Berger cultivates 22 hectares of grassland and 40 hectares of forest in Upper Styria. For the past three years he has also been growing potatoes and Tauern rye on a small scale. In addition to farming, he and his family run a guesthouse with rooms for rent.

Commitment to biodiversity:

The Berger family's organic farm is home to around 20 dairy cows with offspring, 6 ewes with young animals and 2 domestic pigs. The young cows and sheep spend the summer on the mountain pasture, while the mother cows and their calves graze on the meadows around the farm. Georg Berger has created flower strips between the meadows, which also serve as a ‘buffet’ for insects after the meadows have been mown. The organic farmer has also planted species-rich flower mixtures on the forest paths, which serve as cross-country ski trails in winter. The flower decorations around the house are made with a wildflower mixture. A herb garden and a swimming pond have been created and hedges planted. Georg Berger has planted the roofs of the farmhouse and barn with a special plant mixture. The planting does not need to be mowed or maintained. The vegetation slowly releases the water during heavy rainfall and provides food for insects and birds. Georg Berger attaches great importance to supplying catering establishments with organic food and labelling it accordingly. For this reason, he founded the ‘Ramsauer Bioniere’ association together with like-minded people in 1999. The association brings together catering businesses from the Ramsau holiday region that only use organic products and undergo voluntary organic inspections.
