Jakob Wagner

Lower Austria

Jakob Wagner farms around 54 hectares of forest and grassland. He runs a dairy sheep farm and markets some of the milk as sheep's milk cheese and sheep's yoghurt every 14 days at the farm, as well as meat depending on availability.

Commitment to biodiversity:

Extensive cultivation is very important to Jakob Wagner on his grassland, which preserves orchids and valuable dry grassland. Due to the pasture management, the areas are only mowed once or twice. Where oregano or sweet clover blooms during mowing, the mower is raised briefly. On very dry meadows, where almost nothing remains after grazing, he does not mow at all. This type of management is not only good for nature, but also saves costs. Jakob Wagner is convinced that ecology and economy can go hand in hand. The passionate hunter also favours diversity in the forest: newly planted rows of fruit trees and shrubs at the edges of the forest provide more structure and thus more habitat.
