Silvia Fruhmann

Burgenland

Silvia Fruhmann runs a 25 hectare farm, which includes 15 hectares of arable land and 10 hectares of forest, with particular attention being paid to the 2 hectare vegetable cultivation.

Commitment to biodiversity:

Silvia Fruhmann's credo when growing vegetables: only healthy soil produces healthy food. One of the ways she achieves soil health is by planting flower strips between the rows of vegetables. The flower strips are also a habitat for many insects, including beneficial insects, which help her grow vegetables. She also creates space for nature away from the flower strips. She achieves this with a certain courage to be untidy: dead trees are allowed to remain standing, thorny hedges are allowed to proliferate. This creates a colourful mosaic of habitats to promote biodiversity.
