Birgit Braunstein

Burgenland

Birgit Braunstein has dedicated herself to biodynamic viticulture on her 25-hectare farm, cultivating wine on 20 hectares and practicing extensive grassland farming on the remaining 5 hectares.

Commitment to biodiversity:

As a pioneer of the biodynamic movement, Birgit Braunstein forged her own path in viticulture when she took over her parents' winery in 2001. Soil regeneration and the ecological balance of the vineyards have always been central to her work. Cover crops and compost from the farm's own Boer goats and Cameroon sheep have always been used to build humus in the vineyards – fully in line with the principles of a circular economy. For Birgit, however, biodiversity extends beyond the rows of vines: cherry trees are planted, a 6,000 m² herb meadow is created, hoopoe nesting boxes are installed, stone walls are built, and a stork nesting platform is erected. A diverse and vibrant habitat is being created for hoopoes, ground squirrels, white storks, and other wildlife. The vibrancy with which nature responds to Birgit's efforts motivates and strengthens her. For the trained horticulturalist and Qi Gong instructor, nature is not only her workplace but also a source of strength. She also conveys the experience and perception of this intact, vibrant nature to visitors who like to stay and linger on her Green Care (wine) garden farm.
